Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever Form: English Guide for Expats

Has your mortgage advisor asked you for an Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever formulier?

The name is Dutch, the document can look complicated, and it is not always obvious why your employer needs to complete it.

The Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever form, which can be translated as the Additional Employer Provisions Form, provides information about financial protection arranged through your employer in case you become unable to work or die.

It is different from the standard employer’s statement, or werkgeversverklaring.

For expats applying for a mortgage in the Netherlands, understanding the difference is important. Your HR department may also be unfamiliar with the Dutch terminology, particularly if you work for an international or foreign employer.

On this page, Expat Mortgage Platform explains exactly what the form is, what your employer may need to complete, and what you should do if your employer cannot answer one of the questions.

What Is the Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever Form?

The Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever formulier is a questionnaire completed by your employer about financial arrangements and collective insurance that may apply to you as an employee.

A mortgage is a long-term financial commitment. It is therefore important to understand not only what you earn today, but also what could happen to your household income if you become seriously ill, occupationally disabled or die.

Your employer may already provide protection against some of these risks through:

  • continued salary payments during illness;

  • collective disability insurance;

  • WGA gap insurance;

  • supplementary WIA insurance;

  • WIA excess insurance for higher earners;

  • collective death insurance;

  • an Anw gap insurance;

  • pension-related insurance arrangements.

The form helps your mortgage advisor establish which protection already exists before discussing whether additional financial protection may be relevant.

Is “Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever” the same as a Werkgeversverklaring?

No.

These are two different documents, and they serve different purposes.

Employer’s statement – Werkgeversverklaring

A standard werkgeversverklaring, or employer’s statement, primarily provides information about your employment and income.

It can include information such as:

  • your employer;

  • your job;

  • your starting date;

  • whether your contract is permanent or temporary;

  • your gross annual salary;

  • holiday allowance;

  • structural allowances;

  • commission or overtime where applicable;

  • an intention to continue a temporary employment contract;

  • employer loans or wage attachments.

This information may be used when determining whether your income can be accepted for the mortgage.

Additional Employer Provisions Form – Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever

The Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever form looks at something different: what financial protection is already available through your employer if your normal employment income falls away because of disability or death.

In simple terms:

Werkgeversverklaring = What do you earn and what is your employment situation?

Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever = What happens financially if something happens to you?

You may therefore be asked to provide both documents.

Why Does a Mortgage Advisor Need This Information?

Being able to obtain a mortgage today does not automatically mean the mortgage would remain affordable if your income changed.

A proper mortgage assessment therefore goes beyond the question:

“How much can I borrow?”

It can also include questions such as:

  • What happens to your income if you are unable to work?

  • How much salary would your employer continue paying?

  • What happens after two years of sickness?

  • Do you already have supplementary disability insurance through work?

  • What would happen financially to your partner or family if you died?

  • Does your employer provide survivor protection?

  • Would additional insurance actually be necessary?

This last question is particularly important.

If your employer already provides substantial protection, buying overlapping private insurance may not always be appropriate. Your advisor first needs to understand the cover you already have.

Is the Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever Form Mandatory for a Mortgage?

Not for every Dutch mortgage application.

Whether you are asked for it depends on your mortgage advisor, your situation, and the process being followed.

The form is often used as part of the financial and risk assessment surrounding your mortgage rather than simply to establish your current salary.

That means you should not panic if another homebuyer tells you they were never asked for one.

Mortgage files are not identical.

If Expat Mortgage Platform asks you for the form, we will explain why it is relevant to your situation and what your employer needs to provide.

Who Has to Complete the Form?

The employer completes the Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever form.

In most organisations this will normally be handled by:

  • HR;

  • People Operations;

  • payroll;

  • an employee-benefits department;

  • a pension or insurance specialist;

  • another authorised representative of the employer.

You as the employee should generally not guess the answers yourself.

Many of the questions concern collective insurance policies or employment arrangements that may not be visible on your payslip or employment contract.

If you work for a large international company, HR may need to contact its pension provider, insurer or benefits department before it can answer every question.

What Information Is Requested on the Form?

The exact layout can differ depending on the version supplied by your advisor, bank or financial-services provider.

However, an Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever formulier commonly contains the following sections.

1. Employer Details

Your employer may be asked to provide:

  • company name;

  • company address;

  • postcode and city;

  • contact person;

  • contact details.

2. Employee Details

The form normally identifies the employee to whom the benefits apply.

This can include:

  • employee name;

  • address;

  • postcode and place of residence.

It is important that your employer confirms whether a particular collective arrangement actually applies to you, rather than simply confirming that the company offers it to some employees.

Death and Survivor Protection

One part of the form may concern financial protection following the employee’s death.

Your employer can be asked whether the company has arranged a collective death or survivor insurance policy.

One Dutch term you may encounter is:

Anw-hiaatverzekering

This can be described in English as Anw gap insurance or supplementary survivor protection.

The statutory Dutch survivor system does not automatically guarantee every surviving partner a sufficient income. An employer may therefore have arranged additional collective cover.

The form can ask:

  • whether such an insurance policy exists;

  • whether you personally participate in it;

  • when a benefit would begin;

  • the annual benefit amount.

This allows your mortgage advisor to understand what income may remain available to your household if you die.

Continued Salary During the First Two Years of Sickness

Another important section deals with loondoorbetaling bij ziekte, or continued salary payment during sickness.

Under the Dutch system, an employer normally continues paying at least part of an employee’s salary during the first two years of illness.

However, the actual percentage can be higher depending on:

  • your employment contract;

  • your collective labour agreement or CAO;

  • employer-specific arrangements.

Your employer may therefore be asked exactly what percentage of your salary would continue during:

  • the first part of year one;

  • the second part of year one;

  • the first part of year two;

  • the second part of year two.

This is financially important because your mortgage payments continue even if your employment income decreases.

What Happens After Two Years of Illness?

After long-term sickness, the Dutch WIA system can become relevant.

WIA stands for Wet werk en inkomen naar arbeidsvermogen.

In English, it is generally described as the Dutch Work and Income according to the Labour Capacity Act.

The statutory benefit may not replace your entire previous salary.

That means there can be a significant difference between your income while working normally and your income after becoming occupationally disabled.

Employers sometimes arrange collective insurance to reduce this difference.

The Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever form is used to establish whether such insurance exists and whether it applies to you.

What is a WGA-Hiaatverzekering?

You may see the term WGA-hiaatverzekering.

A practical English description is WGA gap insurance.

WGA is part of the Dutch WIA disability system.

Depending on your level of disability, remaining earning capacity, and actual income after disability, a gap can arise between your former earnings and the statutory benefits you receive.

A collective WGA gap policy can provide additional income in certain circumstances.

The employer form may distinguish between different versions of this cover, such as a basic or more extensive WGA gap policy.

Your employer may be asked:

  • whether the company has such a policy;

  • whether you are covered;

  • how long benefits can continue;

  • what level of protection applies.

What Is a WIA Supplement?

Another term that can appear is WIA-aanvulling or WIA-inkomensaanvulling.

This is supplementary insurance designed to provide additional income if an employee becomes occupationally disabled and qualifies for the relevant statutory disability arrangement.

The exact terms depend on the policy arranged by the employer.

That is precisely why your advisor should not guess based on the name of the benefit alone.

The actual policy and coverage matter.

What Is WIA-Excedent Insurance?

Higher-earning employees should pay particular attention to the term WIA-excedentverzekering.

Statutory disability calculations are subject to a maximum insured wage.

If your salary is above the applicable statutory limit, part of your normal income may therefore sit above that limit.

A WIA excess insurance policy can provide additional protection for income above the statutory threshold.

This can be especially relevant for expats working in:

  • technology;

  • finance;

  • engineering;

  • senior management;

  • international organisations;

  • highly skilled migrant positions;

  • other higher-paid professional roles.

If you have a high salary, do not assume that a statutory disability benefit would simply replace the same percentage of your complete salary.

Ask your employer exactly what is insured.

If HR is unsure what a Dutch term means, ask your mortgage advisor before HR selects an answer based on an approximate translation.

Step by Step: What Should You Do With the Form?

Step 1 – Use the Correct Version

Use the form provided or requested by your mortgage advisor.

There are multiple versions of the Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever formulier, and individual institutions can use slightly different wording.

Do not automatically download an old version from a random website if your advisor has sent you a particular form.

Step 2 – Send It to the Right Person at Your Employer

Start with HR or People Operations.

Explain that the document concerns collective employee protection in the event of sickness, occupational disability and death.

For larger employers, HR may forward the document internally to payroll, pensions or employee benefits.

Step 3 – Do Not Fill in Employer Questions Yourself

Even if you think you know the answer, let the employer confirm it.

Insurance arrangements can contain:

  • eligibility criteria;

  • salary limits;

  • waiting periods;

  • different employee categories;

  • policy exclusions;

  • optional participation.

The fact that your company has an insurance policy does not necessarily mean you personally have exactly the same coverage.

Step 4 – Ask HR to Complete Every Relevant Question

Blank answers can create unnecessary follow-up.

If HR genuinely cannot provide certain information, ask them to state that clearly rather than making assumptions.

Step 5 – Check the Form Before Returning It

Before sending the form back to your mortgage advisor, check whether:

  • your personal details are correct;

  • employer details are complete;

  • all applicable questions have been answered;

  • the document has been signed where required;

  • the date has been entered;

  • any requested supporting documents have been included.

Step 6 – Send It to Your Mortgage Advisor

Your advisor can then incorporate the information into the wider financial assessment.

If something is unclear, it is generally easier to resolve it before the mortgage process reaches a time-sensitive stage.

What If I Work for a Foreign or International Employer?

This is particularly relevant for expats.

A foreign employer may have excellent employee benefits but have no idea what an Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever formulier is.

That does not automatically mean there is a problem.

The Dutch terminology may simply not correspond directly with the employer’s own insurance system.

For example, an international employer may provide:

  • group disability insurance;

  • salary-continuation insurance;

  • group life insurance;

  • survivor benefits;

  • long-term disability insurance;

  • pension-based disability cover;

  • income-protection insurance.

In that situation, do not force HR to translate an international benefit into a Dutch category they do not understand.

Ask your mortgage advisor what evidence is required.

It may be useful to provide documents such as:

  • an employee-benefits summary;

  • insurance certificates;

  • pension information;

  • policy conditions;

  • an HR statement;

  • a benefits handbook.

Expat Mortgage Platform regularly deals with international employment situations and can help determine which information is relevant.

What If My Employer Refuses to Complete the Form?

First find out why.

There is an important difference between “We do not provide any additional employee insurance” and “Our HR department does not complete external forms.”

If the problem is internal company policy, ask whether HR can provide the requested information in another official format.

For example:

  • a signed HR letter;

  • an employee-benefits statement;

  • an insurance overview;

  • confirmation from the insurer;

  • pension documentation.

Send this information to your mortgage advisor and let them determine whether it is sufficient.

Do not invent or complete information on behalf of your employer.

Can I Use an English Version of the Form?

Potentially, but discuss this with your mortgage advisor first.

If your employer does not operate in Dutch, an English explanation can make the process considerably easier.

What ultimately matters is that the information required for your financial assessment can be understood and verified.

Expat Mortgage Platform can explain the Dutch terminology to you and help you communicate what is required to an English-speaking HR department.

Does the Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever Form Determine How Much Mortgage I Can Borrow?

Usually, its main purpose is different from the income documentation used to calculate your maximum mortgage.

Documents such as your:

  • employer’s statement;

  • payslips;

  • employment agreement;

  • income history;

are more directly related to establishing your qualifying employment income.

The Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever form is particularly useful for understanding the financial risks after the mortgage has been taken out.

For example:

What happens to your ability to pay the mortgage if you can no longer work?

That is different from asking how much you can borrow based on your salary today.

Temporary Employment Contract? Do Not Confuse the Two Forms

Expats with a temporary employment contract often encounter another source of confusion.

Your employer’s statement can contain information about whether your employment is expected to continue after your current fixed-term contract expires.

That information can be important when a lender assesses your income.

This is not the same as the Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever formulier.

If your mortgage questions are primarily about:

  • having a temporary contract;

  • obtaining an intention statement;

  • whether your present salary can be accepted;

  • what happens if your employer will not issue an intention statement;

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using the Wrong Document

A werkgeversverklaring and an Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever form are not interchangeable.

Asking Your Employer Too Late

HR departments do not always complete mortgage paperwork immediately.

Request the document early.

Guessing What Your Employer Provides

You may have more or less protection than you think.

Let HR confirm the actual arrangements.

Assuming Every Employee Has the Same Benefits

Coverage can depend on your pension scheme, employee category, salary, contract, or voluntary elections.

Translating Dutch Insurance Terms Too Literally

Terms such as WGA-hiaat and WIA-excedent refer to specific Dutch arrangements.

If an international employer is uncertain, involve your advisor.

Leaving Questions Blank

Incomplete documents can result in additional questions and unnecessary delays.

Example Email to Send to Your Employer

You can use the following explanation when sending the document to HR:

Subject: Employer information required for my Dutch mortgage advice

Hello,

I am currently arranging a mortgage in the Netherlands and my mortgage advisor has asked my employer to complete the attached “Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever” form.

The form is used to identify any employer-provided financial protection that applies to me in case of long-term sickness, occupational disability or death.

Could you please complete the sections that apply to my employment and return the signed form to me?

If some Dutch insurance terminology does not correspond with our employee-benefits structure, please let me know. I can ask my mortgage advisor to clarify what information is required.

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards,

[Your name]

Frequently Asked Questions About the Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever Form

What does Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever mean in English?

A practical English translation is Additional Employer Provisions or Supplementary Employer Provisions.

In a Dutch mortgage context, the term refers to financial and insurance arrangements provided through your employer that can be relevant if you become occupationally disabled or die.

What is an Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever formulier?

It is a form completed by your employer describing relevant collective employee benefits and insurance arrangements. It helps your mortgage advisor understand the financial protection you already have through work.

Who fills in the Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever form?

Your employer should complete the employer questions. This is normally done by HR, payroll, People Operations or an employee-benefits specialist.

Is it the same as a werkgeversverklaring?

No. A werkgeversverklaring mainly confirms your employment and income. The Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever form primarily provides information about protection against risks such as occupational disability and death.

Do all mortgage lenders require the form?

No. It is not a universal document for every Dutch mortgage application. Whether it is requested depends on your advisor, the process, and your individual circumstances.

Why does the form ask about sickness?

Your income can decrease if you are unable to work for a prolonged period. The form helps establish how much salary your employer continues paying during sickness and what additional protection may exist after longer-term disability.

What is a WGA-hiaatverzekering?

It is supplementary insurance intended to reduce certain income gaps that can occur under the Dutch WGA disability system.

What is WIA-excedent insurance?

WIA excess insurance can provide additional disability protection for salary above the statutory WIA wage limit. It can therefore be particularly relevant to higher earners.

Does the form affect my maximum mortgage?

The form normally serves a different purpose from the core income documents used to establish borrowing capacity. It primarily helps assess the financial consequences of risks such as occupational disability and death.

What if my employer does not understand Dutch?

Ask your mortgage advisor for guidance before the employer completes the form incorrectly. An international employer may be able to provide equivalent information about group life insurance, disability cover or other employee benefits in English.

What if my employer cannot complete the form?

Ask whether the same information can be supplied through an official benefits statement, HR letter, insurance certificate, pension document or other employer documentation. Your mortgage advisor can then determine whether the alternative evidence is sufficient.

When should I request the form?

As early as possible once your mortgage advisor tells you it is required. International companies and large HR departments sometimes need additional time to collect information from pension or insurance providers.

Need Help With Your Dutch Mortgage Documents?

Dutch mortgage paperwork can be confusing enough before you add an international employer, an English-speaking HR department or unfamiliar terms such as werkgeversverklaring, WIA, WGA-hiaat and Aanvullende Voorzieningen Werkgever.

You do not need to work it all out yourself.

Expat Mortgage Platform helps expats:

  • understand which mortgage documents they need;

  • check their employment and income situation;

  • communicate requirements to international employers;

  • calculate realistic borrowing capacity;

  • compare suitable Dutch mortgage lenders;

  • prepare and submit the mortgage application;

  • understand the process entirely in English.
